How to batch rename photos by date
- Add the photos, from one folder or several devices.
- Choose a pattern. The table shows each new name as you type.
- Download the ZIP and unzip it into your album folder.
Why name photos by date
- Mixed camerasIMG_0001 from one phone and DSC_0001 from another sort apart. Date names sort by the moment they were taken.
- No more collisionsDifferent devices reuse the same numbers. Timestamps make overwrites unlikely, and the counter handles the rest.
- Works everywhereNames survive moving between Windows, Mac, cloud drives and backup disks, while file dates often do not.
- Easy to findSearching for 2024-05 finds that month in any file manager.
Limitations
- The ZIP is built in memory: as a rough guide, stay under about 1 GB per ZIP, and less on a phone, working in batches if needed.
- The date is the camera’s clock. If the clock was wrong, fix it first with Change photo date.
- Videos are not processed.
Frequently asked questions
Is this this photo renamer really free?
Yes. It is 100% free, with no usage limits, no account and no sign-up. There is no paid plan and no feature is locked.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your photos are opened and processed inside your browser and never leave your device. The page only downloads its own code from this site. If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics receives anonymous usage data such as page views, never your photos, their names or their metadata.
How do I rename photos by the date they were taken?
Add your photos, pick a pattern such as {YYYY}-{MM}-{DD}_{HH}{mm}{ss}, check the preview and download the ZIP. The date comes from the EXIF date taken, not from the file date.
What happens with photos that have no date?
By default the file’s modified date is used and the table says so. Untick the option and those photos keep their original name.
What if two photos share the same second?
A counter is added automatically (-2, -3…), so nothing gets overwritten.
Are the photos changed?
No. Only the names inside the ZIP change. Each photo is copied exactly as it was, with its quality and metadata intact.
Why a ZIP and not renaming the originals?
For security, a web page cannot rename files on your disk. You unzip the renamed copies wherever you want and your originals stay safe.
Does the order follow the date?
Yes. The {n} counter is assigned in chronological order, so photos from different cameras interleave correctly.
Analytics: only if you accept cookies, the page loads Google Analytics (through Google Tag Manager) to count visits and see which tools are used. It never receives your photos, their names or their metadata. You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of the page.
