What to remove
How to remove EXIF data from a photo
- Add your photos. Choose or drop one or hundreds. Each one shows what it reveals: location, device, date, personal data.
- Choose what to keep. By default everything goes except the orientation and the colour profile, which keep the photo looking right.
- Click Clean. The result is read back and checked. Download each photo or a ZIP with all of them.
What a photo can reveal about you
- Where you wereGPS coordinates accurate to a few metres, often your home or your child’s school, plus altitude and the direction you were facing.
- WhenThe exact date and time, down to the second and the time zone.
- Who and with whatPhone or camera model, lens, serial numbers, owner name and the software used to edit it.
- Hidden extrasEmbedded thumbnails that may show the photo before cropping, XMP edit history and comments.
Why this remover does not touch your image
Most online tools either upload your photo or redraw it on a browser canvas and save a new, recompressed copy. Here the file is edited at byte level: only the metadata blocks are removed, and the compressed image data stays identical. For HEIC and AVIF, where moving data would break the file’s internal index, the metadata is overwritten in place, so the file keeps its exact size and structure.
What is removed in each format
- JPEG: EXIF, XMP, IPTC/Photoshop, comments, other application blocks, and anything stored after the image (thumbnails, gain maps, Motion Photo video).
- PNG: eXIf, text chunks (tEXt, zTXt, iTXt), timestamps and unknown extra chunks.
- WebP: EXIF and XMP chunks. Animation and transparency are kept.
- HEIC and AVIF: the Exif and XMP items are blanked in place. The file size does not change.
Limitations
- It cannot remove anything visible in the picture, such as faces, signs or a watermark.
- Removing the gain map or Motion Photo video from a JPEG means the photo no longer shows its HDR effect or motion.
- HEIC and AVIF previews only appear in browsers that can display those formats, but cleaning works in all of them.
- There is no quota, but the ZIP is built in memory: with thousands of photos on a phone, work in smaller batches.
- Not tested on every camera model. If a result looks wrong, your original file is untouched.
Private by design
There is no server that receives your photos. You can open your browser’s Network tab, or disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded, and everything keeps working.
Frequently asked questions
Is this this EXIF remover really free?
Yes. It is 100% free, with no usage limits, no account and no sign-up. There is no paid plan and no feature is locked.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your photos are opened and processed inside your browser and never leave your device. The page only downloads its own code from this site. If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics receives anonymous usage data such as page views, never your photos, their names or their metadata.
Does removing metadata reduce photo quality?
No. Metadata is cut out of the file and the image data is copied as it is. Tools that redraw the photo on a canvas recompress it; this one does not.
Can it clean iPhone HEIC photos without converting them to JPEG?
Yes. The metadata inside the HEIC container is overwritten in place, so the file stays a HEIC, with the same size and exactly the same image data.
Why keep the orientation?
Many cameras store the picture sideways and use an EXIF tag to display it upright. If the tag is removed, the photo may appear rotated. It reveals nothing about you, so it is kept by default, but you can untick it.
How do I know the metadata is really gone?
After cleaning, the tool reads the new file again and reports what it finds, and you can open the list of what is left. You can also check the result with any other EXIF viewer.
Do social networks remove EXIF anyway?
Large networks usually strip it from the public copy, but they may still read it first. Email, messaging as a document, cloud links and forums often pass the file on untouched, so cleaning it yourself is the safe option.
Does it remove metadata from videos or PDFs?
No. It handles images only. For PDF metadata, use the PDF Workshop on pdf.utilthings.com.
Analytics: only if you accept cookies, the page loads Google Analytics (through Google Tag Manager) to count visits and see which tools are used. It never receives your photos, their names or their metadata. You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of the page.
